February 25, 2003 Dear Ms. Michel, On behalf of the City, I offer my congratulations and thanks to Spoken Interludes for the exemplary work it is doing to promote short story writing to Los Angeles high school students through the Spoken Interludes Next and the Spoken Interludes Read programs. Now in its second year, this special program you've created helps students build their skills in composition and grammar by learning to write short stories. Through the work of your non-profit organization, students at schools such as the William Tell Aggeler High School and the Downtown Business High School are increasing their reading and comprehension abilities and gaining invaluable exposure to the art of short story writing. You and the other professional writers from the creative community who give their time to this program are helping to give our students a stronger foundation on which to move forward in their education. Hopefully, your efforts will result in some of the 255 students who have already gone through the program being among the next generation of great American writers. Again, thank you for having created this wonderful program from your monthly Spoken Interludes reading salon. I wish you continued success. Very truly yours, ![]() James K. Hahn Mayor |
